Short answer: to unstake TRX under Stake 2.0, you submit an unstake for the amount you want (in Tronscan, TronLink or any Stake 2.0 wallet), wait 14 days, then withdraw the unlocked TRX to your balance. The resources and votes tied to that TRX stop right away; the TRX itself only becomes spendable after the waiting period.
What happens when you unstake TRX?
Unstaking under Stake 2.0 has two separate transactions and a waiting period between them:
- Unstake (
unfreezebalancev2): the TRX leaves your stake and enters a pending period. - Wait: the pending period is chain parameter #70, currently 14 days on mainnet. Nothing can shorten it for your own address.
- Withdraw (
withdrawexpireunfreeze): moves every unstake that has finished waiting into your spendable balance.
While it waits, that TRX no longer produces energy or bandwidth and no longer counts as TRON Power. Unstaking takes back an equal amount of TRON Power: unused power first, then votes, proportionally across the Super Representatives you voted for. Fewer votes means smaller voting rewards from then on.
Before you unstake: three checks
- Undelegate first. TRX whose energy or bandwidth you have delegated to another address cannot be unstaked until you reclaim the delegation.
- Claim your voting rewards. Claiming is a separate action; do it now so you know what you have earned.
- Think about what the stake was doing. If it covered your USDT transfers with energy, those transfers will burn TRX again after you unstake. See how much energy a USDT transfer needs.
How to unstake TRX on Tronscan (with TronLink)
- Go to tronscan.org and connect your wallet (TronLink or another supported wallet).
- Open the Stake 2.0 page from the Resources menu and find your staked balance.
- Choose Unstake, pick energy or bandwidth, and enter the amount. Partial unstaking is allowed.
- Confirm the transaction in your wallet. The amount now shows as unstaking, with its unlock date.
- After 14 days, use Withdraw on the same page and sign once more. The TRX lands in your balance.
The TronLink app has the same flow in its staking section. Wallet screens differ, but every Stake 2.0 wallet sends the same two transactions underneath. In Trust Wallet the flow has a quirk of its own; see how to unstake TRX in Trust Wallet.
How to unstake TRX with the API
For scripts and exchanges, the HTTP API has one call per step:
| Step | Endpoint | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Unstake | wallet/unfreezebalancev2 |
Amount in sun, resource ENERGY or BANDWIDTH |
| Free unstake slots | wallet/getavailableunfreezecount |
At most 32 unstakes can be pending at once |
| Withdraw | wallet/withdrawexpireunfreeze |
Withdraws every finished unstake in one go |
| Cancel | wallet/cancelallunfreezev2 |
Re-stakes everything still pending |
One shortcut: if an earlier unstake has already finished waiting when you start a new one, the network withdraws it automatically in the same transaction.
How long does unstaking TRX take?
Fourteen days from the unstake transaction, on mainnet. The figure is a chain parameter that Super Representatives can change by proposal, so check getUnfreezeDelayDays in wallet/getchainparameters if you need certainty. On the Nile testnet it is one day. Each unstake has its own clock, so several unstakes made on different days unlock on different days.
Need the TRX sooner?
You have two options, and they fit different situations:
- Changed your mind? Cancel the unstake: everything still pending goes back into your stake at once.
- Need liquid TRX now? Early unstake sells the staked position for a 7–10% fee and pays you without the 14-day wait. It requires handing over the address, so read what you give up first.
FAQ
Can I unstake only part of my TRX?
Yes. Stake 2.0 supports partial unstaking, up to 32 pending unstakes at a time.
Do I keep earning voting rewards while the TRX unlocks?
No. The unstaked TRX stops counting as TRON Power straight away, so the votes it backed are removed.
Does unstaking cost anything?
Only the normal network cost of the transactions, which the free daily bandwidth usually covers. There is no protocol fee for unstaking.
I unstaked 14 days ago. Why is my balance unchanged?
The TRX is waiting for you to withdraw it. Use Withdraw in your wallet or on Tronscan. If something else is wrong, see TRX unstake errors and fixes.
What about old Stake 1.0 stakes?
Stake 1.0 balances are unstaked with the old method, which returns the TRX without the 14-day queue but removes all of your votes at once. Most wallets show the two separately.
