Amount is the easy input — a USDT transfer needs about 65,000 energy and you look it up. Duration is the one people guess at, and guessing costs money in both directions: too short and your energy expires mid-batch, too long and you pay for hours you never use. Worse, duration is not just a clock. It decides which market you are bidding into.
What you can choose
The buy widget offers 15 minutes, 1 hour and 3 days as presets, with custom values in between. The calculator models the same range plus 1 day and 30 days. If you place orders through the API or an SDK and say nothing, the default is 3 days (259,200 seconds). On the supply side, providers cap how long they will commit, with a default maximum of 30 days.

The pattern is clear: interactive actions are measured in minutes; infrastructure is measured in days. If you are picking a duration by hand and you are not running a service, you are almost certainly in the minutes column.
Duration changes the market, not just the clock
This is the part that is not obvious from the interface. The order book is queried per duration — a 15-minute book and a 3-day book are different sets of offers from different providers.
Two consequences follow:

- Providers filter by duration. Sellers set a minimum and maximum delegate duration, so each choice you make disqualifies part of the market. Very short and very long rentals both sit in thinner books than the middle of the range.
Price depends on both amount and duration together, which is why a quote is fetched for the exact pair rather than multiplied out from a per-unit rate. Changing the duration re-prices the order.
The cost of getting it wrong
Too short
Rented energy is delegated for a window and returns to the provider when it closes. If the window shuts partway through a batch, the remaining transactions fall back to burning TRX at protocol rates — which is exactly the cost you rented to avoid. Too long
You pay for the whole window whether or not you use it, and unused time is not generally refunded. Renting three days to send one transfer is not catastrophic, but it is pure waste — and it scales badly if you do it every day. The one exception is Smart Matching, which refunds unused duration in TRX when a large order finishes early.

Add headroom to the short end rather than the long end. Fifteen minutes is plenty for one signature, but if you are about to walk through a multi-step flow — approve, then swap, then transfer — give yourself the hour. The price difference is small; the cost of the window closing mid-flow is not.
For anything recurring, extend instead of re-picking
If you find yourself buying the same duration repeatedly for the same wallet, the cheaper pattern is one rental you keep extending. An extension renews resources already delegated to you, so you are not competing for a fresh match each time — and providers who allow extends treat that volume as repeat business rather than something to bid for.

And past a certain volume the question changes shape entirely: if a wallet needs energy permanently, staking your own TRX may beat renting on repeat. Run both numbers in the energy calculator before committing to either.

What is the shortest rental?
15 minutes in the buy widget. Some tools go shorter for their own top-ups — Bulk Send rents for 10 minutes, because a batch completes in far less than that.
Does a longer rental cost more per unit?
Pricing depends on amount and duration together, and each duration has its own set of offers, so there is no fixed multiplier. Get a live quote for the exact combination rather than estimating from a per-unit rate.
Do I get a refund if I finish early?
Generally no — you paid for the window. Smart Matching is the exception, refunding unused duration in TRX on large orders.
What happens if energy runs out mid-batch?
The remaining transactions burn TRX instead. Size the duration against your slowest realistic run, not your fastest.
Why did changing the duration change my fill percentage?
Because you moved to a different order book. Each duration has its own depth, so the same price can be unfillable at one and comfortable at another.
Should I just rent 30 days and stop thinking about it?
Only if the wallet genuinely needs energy continuously. Otherwise you are paying for idle time — and at that level of usage, staking is worth pricing against renting.
