Crypto Card Volume Hits $965M: TRON Leads, Share Slips

By Tronsave July 31, 2026 2 Views

Crypto card volume across all chains reached $965 million in July 2026, with TRON leading at $285.6 million, according to dashboard figures circulated on July 30. That is the largest chain-level share of card spending by a wide margin. It is also TRON’s smallest share in months — down 12.1% month-over-month while the overall market kept climbing.

Card spending is the most literal “real payments” metric in crypto. Someone loaded a card with stablecoins and bought groceries. No trading, no yield farming, no speculation. So the trend inside these numbers matters more than the headline.

Crypto card volume by month, from three independent readings

Reported figures for on-chain card volume through 2026:

| Period | Total volume | TRON’s share | |—|—|—| | March 2026 | ~$607M | 35% | | April 2026 | ~$660M | not reported | | May 2026 | ~$833M | not reported | | Q2 2026 (quarter) | $2.4B | 34% (~$887M) | | July 2026 | $965M | ~29.6% ($285.6M) |

The quarterly figures come from CoinDesk Data and CryptoQuant, cited in TRON’s Q2 network report showing $887M in card volume. The monthly ones come from payment dashboards tracked by analysts. Separately, crypto card deposits crossed $10 billion in early July, up 82% year to date.

Two things are true at once. The market roughly doubled since spring. TRON’s slice of it shrank from about 35% to under 30%.

Why TRON’s share is slipping while its dollars stay first

TRON’s July volume fell 12.1% from June, but the total market grew. That combination means competitors are adding card volume faster than TRON is losing it. Polygon is the clearest example: its card volume jumped 320.7% month-over-month to $57.6 million, moving it past Arbitrum into seventh place.

Even after the slip, the gap is not close. TRON’s $285.6 million is roughly five times the seventh-place chain. But a leader whose share falls five points in one quarter is a leader under real competition, which is a different story from the one the headline number tells.

The reasons are structural rather than dramatic. Card issuers pick chains by settlement cost, liquidity, and integration effort. TRON wins on USDT liquidity — over $90 billion circulates there, about 47% of all USDT. Newer chains compete by subsidizing fees or partnering directly with a single issuer, which can move one chain’s numbers sharply in a single month. A 320% jump on a $13.7 million base is one large partnership, not a shift in user behavior.

What card spending says about who uses stablecoins

The more durable signal in the Q2 data is the transaction size. TRON’s share of sub-$1,000 USDT transfers rose from 43% to 52% during the quarter, and peer-to-peer transfers made up roughly 93% of stablecoin transfer volume on the network.

Small transfers between individuals. That is the profile of a payments network, not a trading venue. Card spending fits the same pattern — it is the point where those small balances leave crypto entirely and become a coffee, a phone bill, a plane ticket. We saw the same behavior in World Cup ticket settlements, where 65% were paid in USDT on TRON.

Daily active users on TRON averaged about 3.5 million in Q2, up from 3.2 million in Q1. Growth in users, growth in small transfers, growth in card spending — three metrics pointing the same direction.

The cost side: what card and merchant flows pay in fees

Every card top-up and every merchant settlement is a TRC-20 transfer, and each one consumes energy. That is where volume turns into an operating expense.

A single USDT transfer costs about 65,000 energy — roughly 6.5 TRX burned if you hold no energy at all. At card-processing scale, this compounds fast:

  • 1,000 settlements a month: about 65 million energy. Burned outright, that is roughly 6,500 TRX.
  • Rent instead of burn: buying that energy on the TRON energy market typically costs a fraction of the burn rate, which is why processors buy in bulk rather than letting the network burn TRX per transaction.
  • Batch it: the mechanics for high-volume senders are in our guide to buying TRON energy in bulk, and merchants settling customer payments have a dedicated walkthrough in accepting USDT (TRC-20) payments with low fees.

For the end user holding only stablecoins, GasFree removes the TRX requirement entirely by taking the fee in USDT. That matters for card users specifically — someone topping up a card rarely keeps TRX around for gas.

What is worth watching next

  • Whether TRON’s share stabilizes near 30%. One month of decline against a growing market is noise. Two more is a trend, and it would suggest issuers are genuinely diversifying chains.
  • Whether the newcomers’ spikes hold. Polygon’s 320% jump came off a small base. The test is whether that volume is still there in September.
  • Total market growth. From roughly $607M in March to $965M in July, card spending is growing faster than almost any other stablecoin use case. That number matters more than the chain split.

The figures here are reported by data providers and payment dashboards, not verified on-chain by this article. Card volumes are inherently off-chain measurements of on-chain settlement, so treat single-month movements with appropriate caution. Nothing here is investment advice.

FAQ

What is crypto card volume? The dollar value spent through cards funded by crypto, usually stablecoins. Volume is attributed to the blockchain the funding assets settle on, which is why chains can be ranked against each other.

Which blockchain leads crypto card volume? TRON, at $285.6 million of the $965 million spent across chains in July 2026 — roughly 30%. It also led Q2 with about $887 million, or 34% of the quarterly total.

Is TRON losing the crypto card market? Not in absolute terms. Its dollar volume remains several times the next chains. Its percentage share has fallen from about 35% in March to under 30% in July, because competitors grew faster, not because TRON collapsed.

What does a card transaction cost on TRON? The settlement transfer consumes roughly 65,000 energy, about 6.5 TRX burned if you hold no energy. Renting energy or using GasFree cuts that cost substantially, which is why high-volume processors rarely pay the burn rate.
